FAQ: Materials & Diamonds
Frequently asked questions about materials, diamonds, and textures in iJewel Playground.
How do I change the rotation of a brushed metal texture?
Go to Picking → Physical Material → Map Sampler and adjust the Rotation property. The Map Sampler settings are available for any texture map (albedo, roughness, metalness, normal, etc.). Note that your model needs proper UV coordinates for this to work — make sure the Triplanar extension is disabled.

How do I get a deeper/clearer engraving?
Use the Simple Text modifier along with Parallax Mapping:
- Go to Modifiers → Simple Text → Add Text and type your engraving. Make sure to click Apply
- Enable Modifiers → Parallax Mapping
- To control the depth, adjust bumpScale in Picking → Physical Material → Bump/Normal
All 3 steps are done.
My diamond looks white/plain instead of sparkly. What's wrong?
This is typically caused by a missing or inappropriate environment map for the diamond material. Try:
- Make sure an HDRI environment map is loaded in Scene → Background / Environment
- Check the Gem Env setting — if it's set to None, the diamond won't reflect anything. Select an appropriate diamond environment map
- Adjust the Bloom parameters in Post Processing — this adds the sparkle/glow effect
- Try adjusting envRotation values in the diamond material settings
All 4 steps are done.
Can I apply a different HDRI specifically for diamonds?
Yes. You can set separate environment map slots for Gem/Diamond materials. Additionally, you can create a custom HDR map specifically optimized for diamond sparkle.

Why do my diamonds have pixelated seams?
Pixelated seams on diamonds are usually related to normal map resolution. The diamond mesh may have low-resolution normals or overlapping/broken geometry. Check the following:
- Make sure your diamond mesh has clean, non-overlapping geometry
- Check that normals are correct — avoid modifiers like mirroring that can create overlapping meshes
- Use the diamond models provided by iJewel, which are optimized for the renderer
All 3 steps are done.
Unnatural black shadows appear inside my marquise-cut diamond. How do I fix this?
This is often caused by incorrect normals or broken/overlapping meshes in the diamond geometry. This can happen when you use modifiers like mirroring in 3D software. Try:
- Recalculate normals in your 3D software before exporting — see the Fix Wrong Normals tutorial
- Check for overlapping or intersecting geometry
- Try different HDRI environments — some environment maps produce better results with certain cuts
- Use the diamond models provided by iJewel, which are verified to work correctly
All 4 steps are done.
How can I reduce diamond sparkle frequency in videos?
Diamond sparkle is mainly controlled by the Gem HDR environment maps. To reduce sparkle frequency:
- Try using different HDRI maps in the Gem Env setting
- Adjust the Bloom parameters in Post Processing
- Modify the envRotation values in the diamond material
All 3 steps are done.
Can I apply a different HDRI to diamonds and metal separately?
Yes. In Playground, you can set separate environment map slots for Metal and Gem/Diamond materials. Go to Scene → Background / Environment and look for the Metal Env and Gem Env options. This lets you use a studio HDRI for metal reflections and a different, more sparkly HDRI for diamond refraction.
How do I create material variations and save them?
- Click on an object in the viewport to select it
- In the Configurators tab, click Add Variation — this adds a material variation icon
- Modify the material properties (color, roughness, metalness, etc.) for each variation
- Repeat for multiple objects and variations
- To save all variations, click the three dots (⋯) above the Material Configurator UI and click Download Preset — this saves to a JSON file that can be reused across models with matching object/material names
All 5 steps are done.

My model's file size is too large because of textures. How do I check which textures are heavy?
Go to Picking → Physical Material and check the different texture maps (Albedo, Roughness, Metalness, Normal, etc.). You can download individual texture images to check their sizes. Large texture maps are usually the main contributor to file size — consider reducing their resolution before re-importing.
The model looks fine in Playground but terrible in Shopify. Why?
Shopify's default 3D viewer does not support iJewel's advanced lighting, diamond rendering, or post-processing effects. To get the same quality on your website, embed your model using the iJewel Viewer SDK or use iframe embedding.
I click "+ Add current material", and a new tab opens in place of a variation. Why?
The material tabs in the configurator are grouped by layer name. A new tab opens when the layer name of the material is different from the open tab. To add the current material as a variation:
- Download the material as a
.pmatfile - Upload it under Materials
- Select it in Add Configuration
All 3 steps are done.
Can I put a PNG logo or an image on the ring?
Yes. Open the Engraving tab, select the part of the model, and click + Add Engraving. Switch Content to Image and upload a PNG, JPG or SVG file. Remove background is on by default and makes a plain background see-through. Use Place, Move, Rotate and Size to position the image.
My bumpScale goes back to 1.00 after I save. How do I keep my value?
- Select the object and open Physical Material in Picking
- Clear the Legacy Bump Scale checkbox below the bump scale value
- Set bumpScale again. The value range changes, so the new value can differ from the old one
- Save the project
All 4 steps are done.
I change the Repeat of a texture, and nothing happens. Why?
Triplanar is on, and it ignores the Repeat and Offset values. Turn Triplanar off in Physical Material.
If the texture then disappears, the model has no UV map. Open Picking → Auto UV Mapping, enable it, and select a mode and an axis. See Auto UV Mapping.
How do I make a watch crystal or a large glass part?
Use a Physical Material, not a diamond material:
- Set Roughness and Metalness to 0
- Turn on Transmission
- Set a Thickness value
All 3 steps are done.
See Transmission.
How do I render a rose cut, an old mine cut, or a scanned stone?
The diamond material follows the geometry of the stone. Model the cut with its real facets in your CAD program, and the stone renders with that cut. A rose cut, for example, has a flat base and a low crown.
A scanned stone has smooth surfaces and no real facets. Give it real facets in your CAD program before you apply a diamond material.
Can I make a two-tone stone?
Yes. Two colors in one stone are possible when each color is a separate mesh. Upload the stone without a diamond material. Then:
- Select the first mesh, go to Picking → Diamonds, and click Make Diamond. Enter a cache key, for example
1 - Select the second mesh and do the same with the same cache key
- Give each mesh its own color in Diamond Material
All 3 steps are done.
I apply a material to one part, and other parts change too. Why?
A material applies to all parts that have the same material name. If the metal and the stones are on one layer in your CAD file, they change together.
Correct this in your CAD file, then upload the model again:
- Put the metal on one layer
- Put each stone shape and each stone color on its own layer
- Delete copies of a part that sit on top of each other
All 3 steps are done.
In Blender, give each part its own material. See How should I name layers for the layer names.
How do I show the same diamonds on my own website?
- Export the model as GLB from Playground. The GLB keeps the diamond materials in the
WEBGI_materials_diamondextension. - Export the scene settings as a
.vjsonfile. - In your viewer, add the diamond plugin (
DiamondPlugin). Without this plugin, the viewer cannot make diamond materials. - Load the GLB, then load the same
.vjsonfile.
All 4 steps are done.
See Export Models and Export Scene Settings.
