HDR lighting
Select an HDR environment map in Playground and adjust the light on your model.
An HDR environment map is an image that wraps around the full scene. It gives the light and the reflections on your model. It is the primary light source for metals, ceramics and pearls. A different map gives the model a very different look.
Before you start
- Open a model in Playground.
- If you use your own map, have the
.hdror.exrfile ready.
Select an environment map from the library
- In the left panel, open the Environments tab.
- Select a preset.
The library has presets that are made for jewellery.
Upload your own environment map
- In the right panel, open the Scene tab.
- Open the Background / Environment section.
- Upload your
.hdror.exrfile as the environment map.
All 3 steps are done.
To make a map of your own, use the HDR Map Editor.
Adjust the light
These settings are in the Background / Environment section.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Env Rotation | Turns the map. The highlights and the reflections move on the model. |
| Env Intensity | Sets the brightness of the light on the model. |
| Fixed Env Direction | Keeps the map fixed while you rotate the model. The reflections move as the model turns. |
| EnvMap BG | Shows the map as the background behind the model. |
Env Rotation and Env Intensity are also in Advanced Settings in the left panel.
Gems use a separate map
A gem can use a different environment map from the metal. To select one, open the Gem Environments tab in the left panel.
Add more lights
The environment map gives the main light. You can add more lights for highlights or shadows.
- In the Scene tab, open the Lights section.
- Select Add Directional Light, Add Ambient Light, Add Point Light or Add Spot Light.
