Diamonds look dull
Correct diamonds that look white, flat or without sparkle in Playground and in BatchX renders.
Symptom
- The diamonds look white, flat or plain.
- The stones have no sparkle or fire.
- A stone is fully white from some camera angles.
Cause
The most common cause is the environment map for the gems. A gem uses its own environment map, separate from the metal. That map drives the sparkle. If there is no gem map, the stone reflects nothing.
A second cause is the model. Gems need face normals, and each unique gem shape needs its own layer.
Fix
Step 1 of 8
- In the Scene tab, open the Background / Environment section. Make sure that an environment map is loaded.
- In the same section, check the Gem Env setting. If the value is None, select a gem environment map.
- Try a different gem map from the Gem Environments tab in the left panel.
- Select the stone. In the diamond material, adjust Env Rotation Offset until the stone shows detail.
- For some cuts, increase Ray Bounces to get a more realistic result.
- In Post Processing, adjust Bloom. Bloom adds the glow of the sparkle.
- In your 3D software, use face normals for the gems.
- Put each unique shape, for example round, pear or marquise, on its own layer.
All 8 steps are done.
BatchX renders
BatchX uses the scene file from Playground. Correct the diamonds in Playground first. Then export the .vjson file again.
