A 3DM file shows nothing

What to do when a Rhino 3DM file uploads correctly but the viewer shows an empty scene.

Symptom

The 3DM file uploads without an error. The viewer shows an empty scene, or some parts of the model are not there.

Cause

The platform shows meshes. A 3DM file can contain NURBS surfaces only, with no meshes. This occurs in two cases:

  • You did not use Shaded mode before the export. Shaded mode makes Rhino build the meshes.
  • The "Save small" option was on. This option removes all meshes from the file.

Hidden objects are a different cause. By default, the upload imports only the visible objects.

Fix

Step 1 of 8
  1. Open the file in Rhino.
  2. Make sure that all objects and their layers are visible.
  3. Set the viewport to Shaded mode.
  4. Export the file as 3DM.
  5. Make sure that "Save small" is off.
  6. Upload the file again.
  7. If the model is still empty, do a check of the polygon count. Keep it below about 200,000.
  8. If the model is too heavy, use the ReduceMesh command in Rhino.

Points and curves

By default, the upload hides point meshes and line meshes. To show them, open Advanced settings in the upload settings. Then set Hide point mesh and Hide line mesh to off in 3DM Options.
