Layers and names
Use one layer for each material and clear file names, so that materials and outputs stay correct.
The platform makes one material from each layer in a 3DM file. Objects on the same layer always get the same material. Objects that need different materials must be on different layers.
Before you start
- You have the model open in Rhino.
- You know which parts are metal, gems, pearls, ceramic or enamel.
Name the layers
These layer names are a recommendation. You can use your own names.
| Part | Layer names |
|---|---|
| Metals, one layer for each tone | Metal 01, Metal 02 |
| Diamonds and gemstones | Gem 01, Gem 02 |
| Pearls | Pearl 01, Pearl 02 |
| Ceramic and enamel | Ceramic 01, Ceramic 02 |
Put each part on the correct layer
Step 1 of 7
- Open the layer panel in Rhino.
- Make one layer for each material that you want to change separately.
- For a two-tone piece, put each metal tone on its own layer. For example, put the band on
Metal 01and the head onMetal 02. - Put the prongs on a metal layer. Do not leave the prongs on a gem layer.
- Put each gem cut on its own gem layer. Refer to Gems and diamonds. Stones of the same cut can share one layer. Do not make a layer for each stone.
- Delete the empty layers.
- Use the same layer names in all your files.
All 7 steps are done.
Keep the layers
A 3DM file keeps its layers. An STL file has no layers and no materials.
Name the files
- Give each file a short, clear name.
- Keep the name of a file constant after you publish the model.
Names have an effect in two places:
- BatchX makes each output file name from the model name, the material names and the view name.
- An embed can find a model by its file name.
