Gems look flat

What to do when diamonds and gems show no facets and look soft or like glass.

Symptom

The gems look flat, soft or like glass. You cannot see sharp facets. Some stones show an incorrect cut.

Cause

There are three possible causes:

  • The gem meshes have welded normals. Welded normals make the facets round, and the stone loses its hard edges.
  • Stones with different cuts are on the same layer. The platform then draws them with one cut.
  • The scene has no gem environment map. This map gives the gems their sparkle.

Fix

Step 1 of 10
  1. Open the file in Rhino.
  2. Select the gem meshes.
  3. Run the Unweld command.
  4. Set the angle to 0.
  5. Set ModifyNormals to Yes.
  6. Put each cut on its own gem layer. Stones of the same cut can share one layer.
  7. Export the file. Then upload it again.
  8. Open the model in Playground.
  9. Make sure that the scene has a gem environment map. This map is separate from the environment map for the metal.
  10. Look at one stone. A correct stone shows sharp facets.

Other 3D tools

In a different 3D tool, use face normals for the gems. Give each cut its own material.
